Day 239: Fashion District

OYLPA Day 239: Fashion District, originally uploaded by klodhie.

Lived in Southern California my entire life, and today was the first day I drove down Broadway in Downtown. I didn't know all those old, historical buildings from the 1920s still stand there, and I almost felt like I was in a movie (I'm a weirdo, I know, but I'm always happy to come across historical culture in L.A.). A few more items for Saturday's themed bridal shower were acquired, and if you have been trying to guess the theme since my last hint, here are some more: we came away with feathers, lace, and parasols.

And what, you may ask, was the excitement for the rest of the day? Well, any day in the life of many Pakistani-Americans would of course be incomplete without more talk of marriage. I was handed a "bio data," picture and all, for the first time (well, in print at least). I was asked to judge whether the person on paper would be suitable to meet and move forward with. I am still unsure if this mystery person is even aware that his bio data is circling the aunty network. I have found that many times, some of you young men are completely unawares of the doings of your mothers, and here, oh male youth, is my honest question to you: why do you let them do that?! I hear enough of the ladies lament about the horridness of this system, but I never really get to hear what it's like on the other side. So, what is it like for you fellows? Do you feel pressure, do you just go with it? Do you let your mothers make deals with others' daughters without knowing a thing? I should apologize for my accusatory tone...but I don't want to. I would just like to hear from you, as a youngish desi man in America, what this whole marriage process is like.

  1. I am curious if there is a Pakistani match-making/dating service that serves the US and Pakistan. There's a well-known Korean one (offices in LA, NYC, and Seoul) that matches up people based on certain criteria - all with a high price tag of course.
