Day 202: Mixer

OYLPA Day 202: Mixer, originally uploaded by klodhie.

Another networking/mixer event this evening, this time with AMP-LA (American Muslim Professionals - LA). See previous post if you're wondering "Why?"

It's a fabulous thing these orgs do for people, putting on events that allow the inhabitants of such a spread out community as LA's meet and mingle. But on a personal level these things are, in all honesty, exhausting. A friend of mine brought up a good point today: a problem with this type of event is that you don't really know what anyone's real intentions are, whether it be for professional, business, marriage, or other purposes. While this is the same reason I initially felt relatively more comfortable at such gatherings (than, say this one back in January), I now am reconsidering whether the uncertainty about people's intentions is part of what makes it feel tiring.

I really just want to hear your thoughts on such events, both pros and cons. Seems like they've been great in helping people find good friends they would otherwise have never met, and simply a good opportunity for young people to meet up. Maybe the uncertainty is a good thing? I confuzed. I can haz cheezburger? It's late.

  1. It does sound tiring. Would you recommend attending one of these things at some point just to see? (Never been)
I think what would probably be even more tiring would be speed dating. Yuck.

  2. @Particulars,

Even though it's tiring (for me at least), I would definitely recommend trying them out! There really is no harm in trying at least 1 or 2. However, I would choose which one to go to really carefully, both for safety purposes and otherwise you'll end up surrounded by people whose values/interests, etc. are all drastically different from your own, and that can be frustrating (assuming you've gone to meet that special someone).

Speed dating must be crazy, but again, what's the worst that can happen? My cousin told me that she and 10 of her friends went one day just for fun, and 3 of the girls found their future spouses that night, which isn't a bad percentage I think!
